Japanese Traffic Police

Japanese Police system is regulated by the National Police Agency (NPC).  Japanese Traffic Police or highway police carry collapsible batons (aluminum) and not guns as their other counterparts around the world.  Most police uniform in Japan is literally the same.  The ladies wear trousers but with a different head gear from their gentlemen counterparts.  Japanese Traffic police are easier to identify from their head-gear.  They wear white caps or white cap covers for easy identification.   As part of their uniform, they wear white knife resistant gloves while on duty.

Japanese police uniform is dark blue in color during summer seasons wear a different frosted grey uniform.  Japan is the only place where most policemen do not carry guns. Gun rules in Japan are still quite strict.  Police officers who carry gun carry Nambu revolvers.  The collapsible batons (aluminum) carried by the police usually come handy incase of counter-attacks.  Japanese Police ride on patrol cars, motor bikes and bicycles during patrol.  Law enforcement on the roads is the work of traffic police officers.

Traffic police duties include regulating speed limits by drivers through speed detection gadgets.  They are also required to keep an eye on any traffic violations by drivers and are usually the first at the scene of a road accident as per requirement.  It is their duty to record and gather information at the scene of any traffic accident and investigate all road accidents.  The Department’s duty is to educate the public on safe use of the roads and better driving techniques.  Incase of an accident it is their duty to offer first-aid to the injured motorists and their passengers before taking them the hospital.

Traffic police in Japan duties require them to keep-check that all un-roadworthy vehicles are kept out of the roads.  They are also expected to make sure that all vehicles on the road are fully licensed and that all the drivers have valid road licenses.  Interestingly, Police in Japan are easily accessible through the Kobans (sub-stations).  These are conveniently placed and are manned on a 24/7 hour basis by police.  The public seek all required in information from these sub-stations. The police work in shifts of 8 hours each.
